IN HONOR OF

Thomas Z. Spitzer
A Tribute to Sergeant Thomas Z. Spitzer: The Light That Never Fades
Sergeant Thomas Z. Spitzer was more than a Marine. He was a son, a brother, a fiancé, and a friend whose legacy is defined by his unwavering commitment to those he loved and served with. A man of integrity, courage, and relentless positivity, Thomas’s impact continues to resonate with everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His sacrifice, made in defense of freedom while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan, has left an indelible mark on his family, friends, and fellow Marines. But beyond the medals and the honor of his service, it is the person Thomas was—a natural leader, a compassionate friend, and a man of unshakable optimism—that will forever be remembered.
Born on February 28, 1991, at Balboa Naval Hospital in San Diego, California, Thomas was a child of a proud U.S. Navy family. He spent part of his early years in the Bahamas and North Carolina before moving to New Braunfels, Texas, where he graduated from Canyon High School in 2009. Whether in sports, music, or work, Thomas showed a drive for excellence that carried through his life. He was a standout in football, baseball, and powerlifting, always pushing himself to be better and encouraging those around him to do the same.
In August 2009, Thomas enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. After completing his training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, he served as a Mortarman with Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines. His first deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan in 2012 solidified his determination to continue serving his country. But it was during his second deployment in 2014, where he transitioned into the Scout Sniper Platoon, that Thomas’s leadership and dedication would shine brightest.
The Legacy of a True Leader
Thomas was a leader whose actions spoke louder than words. He volunteered for the sniper platoon, and through a grueling selection process, he proved himself as a Marine of exceptional skill, intellect, and humility. His peers and leaders alike admired his determination, both physical and mental. He didn’t just strive for personal excellence—he made it his mission to lift those around him, ensuring that his teammates succeeded alongside him.
His leadership extended beyond his training and deployments; it was embedded in the way he approached life. Known for his infectious positivity, Thomas could light up any room with his smile and a simple thumbs-up. It was a trademark that represented his approach to every challenge: optimistic, fearless, and determined to succeed together. Whether in the heat of combat or during downtime, his unrelenting cheer and encouragement made everyone feel valued and empowered.
In Afghanistan, as part of a mission in Helmand Province, Thomas led from the front, always keeping his team’s safety and mission success at the forefront. On June 25, 2014, during an intense firefight, Thomas gave his life defending his fellow Marines and the coordination between Afghan and coalition forces, a crucial part of their mission to ensure the safe return of personnel from Camp Leatherneck.
His sacrifice was felt deeply by those who served alongside him. A fellow platoon mate, Sergeant Matthew Kearney, recalled his shock at the loss: “I just can’t believe he’s gone. Part of me just expects that he’s going to kick open my door,” he said. The entire battalion mourned his passing, honoring him with a memorial ceremony and the traditional 21-gun salute, with “Taps” playing to bid him farewell. But it is not just the ceremony that will keep his memory alive—it is the way his spirit continues to inspire those who remember him.
Forever Remembered, Forever Loved
Thomas’s family will always remember him as the light of their lives. His parents, John and Jean Spitzer, his younger brother, Nicholas Spitzer, and his fiancée, Casey Neef, will carry his memory forward, not just in moments of mourning, but in the countless memories of laughter, love, and leadership that defined his life. His family, and Casey, will forever cherish the promise they made to each other as they looked toward a future together—one that was tragically cut short.
His signature thumbs-up symbolizes more than just a gesture; it was a representation of his approach to life, a reminder that no challenge was too great and that every battle could be faced with a positive outlook and a commitment to those who mattered most. His family finds comfort in the knowledge that Thomas’s legacy of kindness, leadership, and unshakable optimism will continue to inspire others to live with purpose, just as he did.
As his former platoon Sergeant, Staff Sergeant Michael Kliment, now a Sergeant Major, shared, “Thomas did the right things for the right reasons. He was a Marine who led by example, always acting with honor and integrity, and his calmness under pressure made others around him stronger. He was always the person in the platoon who would bring everyone closer.”
